Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan unveiled a long-term blueprint to redefine the Indian Institutes of Technology over the next 25 years, with a focus on inclusivity, research, and global competitiveness.

The vision aims to transform IITs into central drivers of India’s scientific progress and national development by 2047, in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s goal of building a "Samriddh, Viksit, and Atmanirbhar Bharat."

Describing IITs as the “crowning jewels of our higher education system,” Pradhan underlined their strategic role in advancing innovation, addressing national priorities, and promoting cross-disciplinary learning.

The roadmap places inclusivity at the core, expanding access for students from underrepresented backgrounds while also strengthening research capacity across campuses.

It calls for deeper industry partnerships, global academic collaborations, and leadership in frontier technologies such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing, renewable energy, and sustainable infrastructure.

The announcement comes at a time of wider reforms in higher education.

On Aug 20, Pradhan hailed the passage of the Indian Institutes of Management (Amendment) Bill, 2025, which will allow the first IIM to be established in Guwahati, Assam.

The move supports the government’s push to expand world-class institutions across the country.
