Delhi govt plans 10,000-bed hostels for students across the capital

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has announced plans to develop hostel facilities for 10,000 students in the national capital, with separate accommodation options for male and female students.

The proposed hostels will cater to students enrolled in colleges and universities across Delhi. The government has begun discussions with relevant departments to identify suitable sites for the project and is also working on a policy governing the proposed facilities.

Gupta said the initiative is intended to provide students with affordable and secure accommodation while addressing some of the challenges faced by those who move to Delhi from other parts of the country for higher education.

In a video posted on social media, the chief minister said the first phase of the project would offer fully equipped accommodation for 10,000 students. She said work on the initiative has already started.

The proposed facilities are expected to include amenities required for students to manage their day-to-day needs during their stay.

The government said the plan is also intended to ease concerns related to accommodation and food, allowing students to focus on their studies.

Gupta said students come to Delhi to pursue education and work toward building a better future. She said the government wants to create an environment where students can live safely and concentrate on their academic pursuits without having to worry about housing.

The government is currently coordinating with the departments concerned as it works on the project's policy framework and searches for appropriate locations in the city.

The proposed hostel network is expected to offer students an additional accommodation option as they pursue higher education in Delhi, particularly those who relocate to the capital from other parts of the country.
