‘Deepakam’ lights the way for a new era in Sanskrit learning

Sanskrit education for middle schoolers is getting a major upgrade. The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has launched a new Class 8 Sanskrit textbook titled “Deepakam,” designed under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the revised curriculum framework, NCF-SE 2023.

Unlike traditional textbooks that focused heavily on rote learning, Deepakam takes a more dynamic and engaging approach.

The textbook introduces project-based and picture-based learning to help students relate Sanskrit to everyday life and contemporary contexts.

Instead of memorizing rules, students are encouraged to think critically and solve problems using the language.

"This encourages students to explore the language through real-life situations and logical problem-solving. It’s less about memorization and more about thinking," an official explained.

Diagnostic grammar exercises have been included to help identify and address learning gaps. The goal is to make grammar less mechanical and more meaningful.

Modern themes also find space in the book. One chapter discusses 'Digital India,' blending ancient language with present-day relevance.

In keeping with Sanskrit’s literary and cultural legacy, the book features selections from classical texts like the Hitopadesha and Charaka Samhita, emphasizing human values, wisdom, and ethics.

The content is structured to make the subject approachable and enjoyable, with colorful activities, creative writing prompts, and student-friendly exercises.

"Deepakam is not just a textbook. It is a deliberate attempt to shift how Sanskrit is taught in schools," the NCERT said.

According to an official announcement on X (formerly Twitter), the textbook is now available on the NCERT website and can also be purchased through Amazon.in.

By blending heritage with innovation, Deepakam seeks to renew interest in Sanskrit among young learners while aligning with NEP 2020’s broader goal of holistic, competency-based education.
