Opposition MPs disrupt proceedings, demanding discussion on Trump’s claims of mediating Indo-Pak peace and updates on Operation Sindoor; Lok Sabha halted twice in the first hour.
In a turbulent start to the Monsoon session on July 21, the Lok Sabha was adjourned just 20 minutes after beginning amid raucous slogans and protests by Opposition MPs.
The uproar centred on two contentious demands: a response from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to US President Donald Trump’s claim that he had mediated a peace deal between India and Pakistan, and a debate on Operation Sindoor, the retaliatory security operation following the Pahalgam terror attack.
When proceedings began with the national anthem and tributes to the Pahalgam attack victims and Air India crash on June 12, Opposition MPs immediately voiced displeasure, chanting "PM Modi jawab do" ("PM Modi answer now").
Speaker Om Birla offered to allow discussion post–Question Hour, but the disruption persisted, forcing adjournment until noon.
After resuming at midday, the uproar resumed, prompting a second adjournment until 4 pm. Meanwhile, the Rajya Sabha witnessed sharp exchanges between Opposition Leader Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of the House JP Nadda over both national security and foreign policy concerns.
The chaos spilled into the Rajya Sabha as well, marked by similar protests from members including Mallikarjun Kharge and Randeep Surjewala, who sought immediate discussions on Operation Sindoor and the Pahalgam attack.
By late afternoon, the Rajya Sabha had passed the Bills of Lading Bill, 2025, while the Lok Sabha remained adjourned until the next sitting due to unresolved disruptions.
