Promoting responsible, inclusive, and sovereign artificial intelligence governance

India hosted the AI Impact Summit 2026 at the Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, bringing together global leaders, policymakers, technology companies, and over 300 exhibitors. The summit focused on shaping the future of artificial intelligence (AI) through responsible governance, ethical frameworks, and inclusive digital growth. It highlighted India’s ambition to play a central role in global AI policymaking and technological innovation.
During the summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the “MANAV Vision” framework for AI governance. The acronym MANAV outlines five guiding principles: Moral and ethical AI, Accountable governance, National sovereignty over data, Accessible and inclusive AI, and Valid and lawful systems. The framework emphasizes that AI development must align with democratic values, protect individual rights, and serve the broader interests of society.

The MANAV Vision stresses the importance of national sovereignty over data, ensuring that countries maintain control over their digital infrastructure and sensitive information. It also promotes inclusive AI systems that benefit all sections of society, particularly marginalized communities. Ethical safeguards, transparency in algorithms, and lawful deployment of AI technologies were highlighted as essential to prevent misuse, bias, and discrimination.
The summit provided a platform for dialogue between developed and developing nations, positioning India as a bridge between the Global North and Global South in AI governance debates. Discussions covered areas such as AI regulation, cybersecurity, digital inclusion, and innovation partnerships.
The significance of the AI Impact Summit and MANAV Vision lies in strengthening India’s global leadership in emerging technologies. By proposing a balanced and inclusive framework, India seeks to shape global norms around AI while safeguarding national interests and promoting sustainable technological growth.
Overall, the summit marks a significant milestone in India’s digital journey, reinforcing its commitment to ethical AI, technological sovereignty, and responsible global governance.
