AI Appreciation Day is being celebrated in India. The occasion honors the nation’s expanding influence in the worldwide AI arena

India's path in artificial intelligence
Artificial intelligence is revolutionizing healthcare, education, agriculture, governance, and industry nationwide.

India's path in AI started in the 1960s with initial research in computer science.
A significant advancement occurred in 1986 with the Knowledge-Based Computer Systems initiative. In the 1990s, entities such as C-DAC furthered supercomputing and initial AI efforts.
In the 2000s, IT firms like TCS, Infosys, and Wipro started investing in AI, as universities developed a robust talent pool.
The 2015 Digital India initiative and NITI Aayog’s AI strategy from 2018 boosted development.
Advancements in artificial intelligence
The advancements in AI in India have come from years of strategic planning and backing.
India has become the fastest-growing developer population in the world and is second in public generative AI projects on GitHub.
The nation houses 16% of the global AI workforce, highlighting its increasing impact on AI development and usage.
India has achieved substantial progress in AI, becoming a prominent participant in the worldwide AI arena. As per the AI Index Report 2024 from Stanford University, India stands at seventh place worldwide in total private AI investments from 2013 to 2023, amounting to USD 9.85 billion.
Currently, India is emerging as a worldwide leader in AI. Its skilled software professionals and access to extensive data sets contribute to building powerful AI solutions.
India's varied requirements also offer practical scenarios for AI testing—from agriculture and healthcare to traffic management and public services.
Different Stages
India is swiftly advancing its AI and semiconductor framework with the IndiaAI Mission, sanctioned for 2024, which designates ₹10,300 crore over a five-year period.
The government initiated initiatives such as the Skill India AI Portal, National AI Skilling Programme, and AI Youth Bootcamp.
These programs provide training, certifications, and practical projects to students and employees.
Vocational centers are increasingly utilizing AI tools to enhance conventional industries.
The government is investing in AI research by funding programs and establishing new centres that connect education with industry.
Collaborations with technology leaders such as Google, Microsoft, and IBM are assisting India in remaining linked to worldwide advancements.
BharatGen: Launched in 2024 in Delhi, BharatGen is the first multimodal LLM initiative funded by the government worldwide.
Its goal is to improve public service provision and citizen involvement via basic models in language, speech, and computer vision.
It includes a group of AI researchers from leading academic institutions in India.
India's Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) has transformed digital innovation by integrating public financing with innovation driven by the private sector.
Aadhaar, UPI, and DigiLocker function as the core infrastructure, with private companies developing tailored applications above these platforms.
This model is currently being upgraded with AI, incorporating smart solutions into financial and governance systems.
The government’s AI for All initiative and the National AI Strategy seek to leverage AI not only for economic development but also to enhance lives, guarantee inclusion, and foster equity.
Prospective Viewpoint
India's well-structured AI regulations foster innovation and maintain accountability, steering clear of both excessive regulation and unregulated market control.

Rather than focusing solely on laws, it invests in AI-based protections via leading universities and IITs to address challenges such as deep fakes, privacy concerns, and cybersecurity threats.
This technology and law approach encourages ethical and inclusive development of AI.
Concentrating on open data, cost-effective computing, and regional solutions, India is establishing an inclusive environment advantageous to companies and researchers.
