Operation Rising Lion: Israel Strikes Iran

Operation Ascending Lion

Israel initiated a significant military campaign consisting of numerous airstrikes, targeting over 100 sites throughout Iran.

Primary objectives included: Iranian nuclear plants, military installations, missile launch sites, and leading military and nuclear figures.

Assaulted Natanz Nuclear Facility—the core of Iran’s uranium enrichment program, situated in the Central province of Isfahan.

Israel's attacks eliminated high-ranking military officials such as:

Maj Gen Mohammad Bagheri, head of the military staff

Gen Hossein Salami, leader of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC), arguably the most influential organization in the nation.

Israel also aimed at several military locations throughout Iran. These consist of:

  • a nuclear research facility and two military installations in Tabriz in northern Iran
  • missile manufacturing and development sites in Bid Kaneh, located on the southern outskirts of Tehran
  • a missile facility in Kermanshah located in central Iran; along with several military installations in and near Tehran.

This marks Israel's largest assault on a sovereign nation since the 1967 conflict and will probably produce significant repercussions for both the region and the globe.

Why did Israel launch an attack at this time?

The direct catalyst was a resolution approved by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) designating Iran as non-compliant with its nuclear commitments - the first resolution of this kind in twenty years.

The decision was made following discoveries that Iran was covertly carrying out nuclear operations at three unknown locations. Israel has considered a nuclear Iran an existential danger for a long time.

Discussions in Oman between Iran and the US aimed at restoring the 2015 nuclear agreement have revealed minimal advancement.

Wider Geopolitical Repercussions: A larger regional conflict could result from the strike. The likelihood of an open conflict is increased by Iran's drone attacks in response and the threat of additional retaliation.

The US-Iran negotiations to resurrect the 2015 nuclear agreement in Oman have probably been derailed by the attack.

Arab nations have become closer to Israel as a result of the shared threat posed by Iran. As Israel and the Gulf nations strengthen their security cooperation, the Abraham Accords might become even more profound.
