Democratic values celebrated globally

Several states in the United States, including Alaska, Oregon, Washington, Nebraska and South Dakota, officially proclaimed 26 January 2026 as the “Republic Day of India,” marking a significant gesture of international recognition for India’s constitutional values and democratic traditions. The proclamations coincided with India’s 77th Republic Day celebrations and highlighted the growing depth of people-to-people ties between India and the United States.
The declarations issued by state governors acknowledged the adoption of the Constitution of India on 26 January 1950, describing it as a landmark moment that established India as a sovereign, democratic republic committed to justice, liberty, equality and fraternity. Several proclamations noted that these constitutional ideals closely resonate with the democratic principles shared by the United States, reinforcing the common values underpinning the India–US partnership.

A central theme across the proclamations was the contribution of the Indian diaspora to American society. Indian Americans were recognised for their achievements in fields such as technology, healthcare, education, business, science and public service. The proclamations highlighted how the community has enriched cultural diversity, driven innovation and strengthened local economies in these states, while also serving as a vital bridge between the two nations.
Community organisations and Indian diaspora groups across the US marked the occasion through flag-hoisting ceremonies, cultural programmes, discussions on constitutional values and outreach events. These celebrations not only fostered a sense of pride among the Indian-origin community but also promoted greater awareness of India’s history, democratic journey and global role among wider American audiences.
Diplomatically, such recognitions reflect the expanding scope of India–US relations beyond strategic and economic cooperation to include strong societal and cultural engagement. Analysts note that sub-national diplomacy, including state-level proclamations and exchanges, plays an increasingly important role in strengthening bilateral ties in a federal system like the United States.
Overall, the recognition of India’s Republic Day by multiple US states underscores India’s growing global stature and the positive influence of its diaspora. It reinforces shared democratic values and signals the deepening of India–US relations at both governmental and people-to-people levels, contributing to a more resilient and comprehensive partnership.
