International Energy Agency (IEA) released Electricity 2025 Report

Key Points of the Report:

Global:

  • World energy demand grew by 4. 3% in 2024 and is projected to grow by nearly 4% over the next three years, until 2027.
  • China is now the biggest consumer of electricity, beating the US and the EU.
  • Electricity generation would stabilize global CO2 emissions in 2025–2027 after increasing by 1% in 2024.
  • About 95 percent of the increase in electricity demand from 2025 to 2027 is projected to be met by renewable energy, including solar, wind, and hydropower.

India:

  • Demand for electricity grew by 5. 8% in 2024, and by 6. 3% per year on average between 2025 and 2027.
  • India thermal power capacity to reach 283 GW by 2032
  • India’s power mix in 2024 will still be 74 per cent coal.
  • From 21 % in 2024 to 27 % in 2027, the share of renewables will increase, mainly thanks to solar PV.
  • By 2031–2022, nuclear power will have tripled from 8. 2 GW to 22. 5 GW, up 13% from 2024.

Globally, it is constructing data centers, EV charging infrastructure, AC, industrial production (solar PV cells), etc., especially in China.

India’s healthy growth of 7% (IMF) and heat waves are pushing up AC demand. The PM-Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana and the amendments in the Electricity (Rights of Consumers) Rules, 2024 make it easier to install solar plants and get electricity connected.
