Indian Railways achieved a milestone when the Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya Division successfully ran a 4.5 km freight train, dubbed “Rudrastra,” composing 354 wagons and powered by seven locomotives to boost cargo efficiency.

Indian Railways has flagged off "Rudrastra", Asia’s longest freight train to date, stretching an impressive 4.5 kilometres. Operated by the East Central Railway’s Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya (DDU) Division, the train was formed on Aug 7 by linking six empty BOXN rakes, totaling 354 wagons, and powered by seven locomotives.
The train covered a 209 km route from Ganjkhwaja (UP) to Garhwa Road (Jharkhand) in approximately 5 hours 10 minutes, achieving an average speed of 40–41 km/h.

The journey began on the Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) to Sonnagar before moving onto regular tracks toward Garhwa Road.
The logistical benefits are significant. Railway officials explained that operating Rudrastra as a single unit eliminates repetitive crew assignment, route planning, and scheduling for six separate trains, thereby saving time, labour, and operational costs.

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted the train’s success as a showcase of inter-departmental coordination and DDU Division’s operational excellence.
This landmark trial sets a new benchmark in freight transportation and aligns with Indian Railways' goals of enhanced capacity, efficiency, and environmental sustainability.
The use of a super-long train like Rudrastra paves the way for accelerated bulk logistics and optimized use of existing rail infrastructure.
