Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin over the phone, reaffirming bilateral cooperation and economic ties, as US President Donald Trump renewed his call for steep tariffs on Indian goods.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a phone conversation, discussing ways to bolster the strategic partnership between India and Russia.
According to an official statement, the two leaders reviewed ongoing bilateral projects in defense, energy, and trade, with both agreeing to deepen economic engagement.

The discussion comes at a sensitive time, as President Trump reiterated his plan to impose a 50% tariff on Indian imports if elected, saying it would protect American farmers and manufacturers.
India has not issued an official response to Trump’s remarks, but officials have emphasized that New Delhi will safeguard national interests while pursuing balanced trade relations.

Putin and Modi also touched upon regional and global issues, reaffirming cooperation within multilateral forums such as BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.
The Kremlin described the conversation as warm and constructive, noting that both sides are committed to further expanding their long-standing partnership.
Simultaneously, the Kremlin confirmed that Putin has accepted Trump’s invitation for a summit. The two leaders are scheduled to meet on Aug 15 in Alaska, marking a significant diplomatic engagement in Moscow–Washington ties.
