France and Brazil initiated a groundbreaking global effort called the Blue Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) Challenge

Concerning the Blue Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) Challenge
It encourages nations to incorporate ocean-focused initiatives into their climate strategies, referred to as Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).

The initiative seeks to significantly enhance ocean-centered climate efforts in anticipation of the 30th Conference of Parties (COP30) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Belem, Brazil.
The initiative receives backing from multiple organizations such as Ocean Conservancy, the Ocean & Climate Platform, the World Resources Institute (via the Ocean Resilience and Climate Alliance – ORCA), and WWF-Brazil.
Importance of Oceans in Climate Initiatives
Carbon Sequestration: Oceans take in more than 25% of worldwide CO₂ emissions and 90% of the extra heat produced by human actions, making them essential for addressing climate change.
Blue Carbon Ecosystems: Coastal habitats such as mangroves, seagrasses, and salt marshes sequester carbon at rates that can be five times greater than those of land forests.
Biodiversity: Marine environments host a wide variety of life forms, and safeguarding these ecosystems is crucial for preserving biodiversity, which helps maintain the ecosystem's resilience against climate effects.
Livelihood and Food Security: Oceans sustain more than 3 billion individuals globally who rely on marine resources for nourishment, employment, and economic endeavors.
Efforts for Ocean Protection
Ocean Cleanup Initiative: Established in 2013, The Ocean Cleanup is a non-profit entity dedicated to creating innovative technologies aimed at eliminating plastic waste from the ocean.
United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030): Seeks to advance ocean science as an essential instrument for sustainable development, environmental conservation, and climate action.
High Seas Treaty (BBNJ Agreement – Agreement on Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction): Established in 2023, this significant legally binding accord seeks to safeguard marine biodiversity in international waters.
Blue Carbon Initiatives: It denotes the carbon sequestered by coastal and marine ecosystems like mangroves, seagrasses, and salt marshes.
The goal of the National Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) Network is to preserve important coastal and marine environments, such as seagrass beds, mangroves, and coral reefs.
ICZM, or Integrated Coastal Zone Management: to address the issues of pollution, overfishing, and erosion that are contributing to the degradation of coastal ecosystems.
Obstacles and Difficulties
Financial Restraints: It might be difficult for many developing countries to get the money they need to adopt ocean-based climate solutions.
Technical and Scientific Challenges: In order to be implemented successfully, ocean-based solutions are complicated and call for advanced scientific knowledge.
