Focus on expanding millet cultivation and promoting nutritious millet-based products

The Government of India has expanded initiatives to promote millets under the Shree Anna Initiative. The programme aims to encourage farmers to cultivate millets while increasing awareness and consumption of millet-based food products in both domestic and international markets.
As part of the initiative, efforts are being made to support millet cultivation among farmers through improved seeds, agricultural support, and market linkages. The government is also promoting millet-based food products to increase their availability and popularity among consumers.

Millets are widely recognised as climate-resilient crops because they require less water and can grow in challenging climatic conditions. They also have high nutritional value, making them important for improving dietary diversity and public health.
Experts note that expanding millet production and consumption can strengthen nutrition security and sustainable agriculture, while also supporting farmers’ livelihoods and enhancing resilience to climate
