What is Anemia?

Anemia is a medical condition characterized by a deficiency of healthy red blood cells or hemoglobin in the blood, primarily due to iron deficiency, which hampers the transport of oxygen to various organs.

Key Statistics:

In India, 67.1% of children and 59.1% of adolescent girls are affected by anemia (NFHS-5, 2019-21).

Worldwide, anemia impacts 500 million women aged 15-49 and 269 million children under the age of five.

Three out of four women in India have inadequate dietary iron intake.

Government Initiatives:

Anemia Mukt Bharat (AMB): Initiated in 2018, this program employs a 6x6x6 strategy:

  • 6 interventions: Iron and folic acid (IFA) supplementation, deworming, provision of fortified foods, promoting behavior change, digital monitoring, and addressing non-nutritional factors.
  • 6 target groups: Pre-school children, school-aged children, adolescents, pregnant women, lactating mothers, and women of reproductive age.
  • 6 institutional mechanisms: Coordination from national to grassroots levels.

Digital Integration: Enables real-time tracking of anemia through mobile applications.

Linkages: The program is integrated with POSHAN Abhiyaan and the School Health Program.
