Experts from the Wildlife Institute of India recently fitted collars on three fishing cats in Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary, Andhra Pradesh, to research the species' behavior
Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary – Positioned in the East Godavari district, Andhra Pradesh, India.
Founded – 1978 pursuant to the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972.
It is located at the delta of the Godavari River, abundant in estuarine systems and backwaters.
Mangrove forest – This ecosystem is a vital mangrove forest that boasts a diverse array of flora and fauna suited to brackish water environments.
Estuarine ecosystem – It sustains a combination of freshwater and marine species because of tidal effects.
Main Wildlife & Plant Life
Species at risk – Fishing cat, Otters, Smooth-coated Otter, and Small-clawed Otter.
Avian species – More than 120 types, such as Pond Herons, Egrets, Flamingos, and Darters.
Reptiles & Amphibians – This category encompasses crocodiles, snakes, and frogs that are indigenous to estuarine environments.
Aquatic & Avian Diversity – It serves as an essential breeding ground for marine fish and crustaceans.
Birds that migrate – This site is a crucial rest area for species that migrate during winter.
Fish diversity – It encompasses estuarine and marine species that have adapted to changes in salinity.
Flora – Predominant mangrove types include Avicennia, Rhizophora, Sonneratia.
It also includes thick mangrove clusters, tidal channels, and mud flats.
