Strategy aims to position India as a global millet hub, boost farmer incomes, and expand exports to West Asian and European markets

The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare has announced a comprehensive Millet Export Promotion Plan for 2026–27, aimed at strengthening India’s position in the global millet market. The strategy focuses on branding India as a leading supplier of high-quality millets while expanding access to emerging international markets.
The plan includes targeted support for Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) to enhance aggregation, processing, packaging, and quality certification of millet produce. By strengthening supply chains and improving value addition, the government aims to enhance export competitiveness and ensure better price realisation for farmers.

Special emphasis has been placed on expanding exports to West Asian and European markets, where demand for nutritious and climate-resilient grains is growing. Marketing campaigns, trade facilitation measures, and improved logistics support will be part of the strategy to promote Indian millets globally.
Millets are climate-resilient crops that require less water and can withstand adverse weather conditions, making them crucial for sustainable agriculture. The initiative builds on the momentum generated during the International Year of Millets 2023, which increased global awareness about their nutritional and environmental benefits.
The export promotion plan is expected to diversify farmer incomes, enhance rural livelihoods, and strengthen India’s agricultural trade profile while supporting climate-resilient farming practices.
