Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana expands access to low-cost generic medicines through thousands of Jan Aushadhi Kendras across the country

India observed Jan Aushadhi Diwas on 5 March to raise awareness about the availability and benefits of affordable generic medicines under the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP). The initiative aims to ensure that quality medicines are accessible to citizens at significantly lower prices.
Launched by the Government of India, the scheme promotes the use of generic medicines through a nationwide network of Jan Aushadhi Kendras. Currently, more than 10,000 such centres are functioning across the country, providing essential medicines at prices that are 50 to 90 percent lower than branded alternatives.

The programme seeks to reduce the financial burden of healthcare on households, particularly for economically weaker sections who often struggle with high out-of-pocket expenditure on medicines. By encouraging the use of generic drugs, the government aims to make healthcare more inclusive and affordable.
Jan Aushadhi Diwas also highlights the importance of strengthening India’s pharmaceutical supply chain and promoting public awareness about the safety and effectiveness of generic medicines. Various awareness campaigns, outreach programmes, and health initiatives are organised across the country to educate people about the scheme.
The initiative plays a significant role in improving healthcare accessibility, reducing medicine costs, and supporting the broader goal of universal health coverage in India.
