Four Indian business schools have secured places among the world’s leading institutions for teaching-case impact, with the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIM-B) emerging as the country’s top performer, according to the Financial Times’ BizEd Impact analysis.

IIM Bangalore ranks 11th globally in the teaching-case category, followed by the SP Jain Institute of Management and Research (SPJIMR) at 15th, Management Development Institute (MDI), Gurgaon, at 18th, and the Institute of Management Technology (IMT), Ghaziabad, at 25th.

The rankings highlight the international reach of teaching cases developed by Indian management institutions, bringing real-world business challenges into classrooms and giving students opportunities to examine decisions involving strategy, finance, operations, leadership and public policy.

Teaching cases are a key part of management education, allowing students to analyse complex business situations, weigh competing priorities and explore possible solutions. Their adoption in classrooms beyond their institutions of origin can also help bring regional business experiences and emerging-market challenges to a global audience.

How business-school research makes an impact

The Financial Times’ assessment examines research influence across four dimensions: publications in practitioner-focused journals, citations in public-policy documents, external research funding and the use of teaching cases in classrooms worldwide.

The framework looks beyond conventional academic indicators, such as journal publications and scholarly citations, to assess how business-school research connects with industry, policymakers and management education.

However, the four Indian institutions’ strong showing in teaching cases contrasts with the international institutions leading other categories.

In practitioner-focused publications, Switzerland’s IMD, the Netherlands’ Tias and France’s Edhec feature among the leading institutions. In policy-related citations, the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, Columbia Business School and the University of Zurich are among the top performers.

Wharton leads the category measuring research impact through external grants, followed by the University of St Gallen in Switzerland and the University of Zurich.

What the rankings mean for Indian management education

The results underline that business-school research can reach different audiences through multiple channels. Practitioner-focused publications bring academic insights closer to corporate decision-makers, policy citations reflect engagement with government and public institutions, while teaching cases translate research and business experience into classroom learning.

For Indian management institutions, the teaching-case rankings offer one measure of their international academic reach. Cases built around Indian companies, entrepreneurs and public-sector initiatives can expose students worldwide to the country’s business environment, management practices and economic challenges.

The rankings, however, should be interpreted with care. The circulation or adoption of a teaching case does not necessarily mean it has changed corporate behaviour or improved business outcomes. Similarly, policy citations and research funding indicate engagement and support, but do not by themselves establish the extent of real-world impact.

The broader significance of the assessment lies in its attempt to measure how business-school research travels beyond academic journals. For India’s leading management institutions, their standing in the teaching-case category points to a growing presence in the global exchange of business knowledge, even as wider measures of research influence tell a more varied story.
