 India-US trade dialogue

The India-US trade dialogue has hit a dead end, with Washington abruptly halting a scheduled visit of its negotiating team this month and imposing unprecedented tariffs on Indian products, sources confirmed.

The suspension, which follows months of talks since Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the US in February, assumes sharp significance after President Donald Trump announced a punitive 50% tariff on Indian goods — the steepest levied on any country. Half of that duty is already in force, while the remaining 25% linked to India’s purchase of Russian oil hangs in the balance of global geopolitics.

Farm sector red line

At the heart of the impasse lies agriculture. India has refused to yield ground on safeguarding its farmers, fisherfolk and cattle keepers — a stance Modi reinforced in his Independence Day address. “We will not compromise on the well-being of our farmers,” he said, echoing his earlier warning that he would pay “a very heavy personal price” if necessary.

Trump, however, has made agricultural market access for American producers a non-negotiable priority, leaving the deal stuck.

The uncertainty deepens as Trump’s high-profile Alaska summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin failed to secure a ceasefire in Ukraine. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned that secondary tariffs on India tied to Russian oil purchases could rise if negotiations with Moscow falter.

“I could see, if things don’t go well, then sanctions or secondary tariffs could go up,” Bessent told Bloomberg, signaling that India may face further economic heat as Washington recalibrates its strategy amid geopolitical turbulence.

For now, the road to India-US trade breakthrough remains blocked — with tariffs biting, farmers at the center of a diplomatic standoff, and geopolitics cast a long shadow on commerce.
