Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is set to meet European leaders in London on March 2, following a heated exchange with US President Donald Trump. The visit comes as Ukraine secures a $2.8 billion loan from the UK and seeks to address growing concerns over the war with Russia. King Charles has also agreed to meet Zelensky, though his role remains largely symbolic.

A critical summit in London

Zelensky arrived in Britain on March 1, where he met with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer at Downing Street. The two leaders signed an agreement to expedite financial aid to Ukraine, with the first installment expected to be disbursed next week.

The March 2 summit, convened by Starmer, will bring together European leaders to discuss the ongoing war and prospects for peace. Zelensky’s recent confrontation with Trump and US Vice President JD Vance has heightened European concerns while potentially strengthening Russia’s strategic position.

Can King Charles play a role?

Although King Charles has been known to express views on issues such as the environment and immigration, he has no direct political power and is expected to remain neutral in global conflicts. While he can offer humanitarian support and engage in diplomatic discussions, any substantive aid to Ukraine must come from the UK government rather than the monarchy.

Zelensky’s heated exchange with Trump

Tensions escalated between Zelensky and Trump during a meeting in the Oval Office on Feb 28. Trump reportedly accused the Ukrainian leader of not being prepared to negotiate peace with Russia and downplayed the significance of their meeting.

"You don’t have the cards right now. You're either going to make a deal or we’re out, and if we’re out, you’ll fight it out, and I don’t think it’s going to be pretty. You’re gambling with millions of people … You’re gambling with World War Three,” Trump allegedly told Zelensky.

The fallout from this confrontation has raised alarm in Europe, where leaders fear that diminishing US support could tilt the balance of power in Russia’s favor. The upcoming summit will be crucial in determining the next steps for Ukraine and its Western allies.
