Nomination comes amid tariff tensions and strained Delhi-Washington ties, with Gor also tasked as Special Envoy for South and Central Asia.

Seven months into his second term, US President Donald Trump has nominated his close confidant Sergio Gor as the next American ambassador to India — a move that comes at a critical juncture in bilateral relations strained by tariffs and energy trade disputes.
Trump announced the nomination on his social media platform Truth Social, praising Gor, 38, as “a great friend” and a trusted operative who has been at his side through campaigns, publishing ventures, and political action committees. Gor, who currently heads the powerful White House Presidential Personnel Office, will retain his position until his Senate confirmation.

“For the most populous region in the world, it is important that I have someone I can fully trust to deliver on my agenda,” Trump said, adding that Gor had overseen the hiring of nearly 4,000 appointees across federal agencies in record time.
The dual designation — ambassador to India and Special Envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs — marks a new experiment in US diplomacy, one that Delhi will watch closely to understand the scope of Gor’s mandate. The ambassadorial post has remained vacant since January, when Eric Garcetti returned to Washington.
Gor, born in Soviet-era Uzbekistan in 1986 and raised in the United States, carries a diverse political résumé. He worked for Senator John McCain’s 2008 presidential campaign, later joined Senator Rand Paul as communications director and deputy chief of staff, and played a central role in Trump’s fundraising and publishing ventures. In 2024, Trump appointed him to lead the Presidential Personnel Office, where he became a pivotal figure in reshaping the federal bureaucracy.
For Delhi, Gor’s arrival will be closely scrutinized. His tenure begins at a moment when Washington has targeted India with steep tariffs and expressed unease over its continued oil imports from Russia. While US Secretary of State Marco Rubio hailed the nomination, calling Gor “an excellent representative of America in one of the most important relationships in the world,” the new envoy will face the challenge of stabilizing ties at their lowest point in years.

Grateful for the nomination, Gor said on Truth Social:
“It will be the honor of my life to represent the United States. Nothing has made me prouder than to serve the American people through the GREAT work of this administration.”
With Trump choosing a trusted loyalist for the Delhi post, Indian policymakers see not just an ambassador — but a direct line to the US president himself.
