Poland has called for an emergency UN Security Council meeting after Russian drones violated its airspace, implementing a no-fly zone along the eastern border while NATO and neighboring countries monitor escalating tensions.

Poland has called for an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council following a significant violation of its airspace by Russian drones on Sep 9.
At least 19 drones entered Polish territory during a broader Russian attack on Ukraine. Poland responded by shooting down several of the drones, marking the first time a NATO member has engaged Russian assets in its airspace since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

NATO forces provided support in intercepting the drones, highlighting the alliance’s commitment to collective defense.
The Polish government described the drone incursion as a deliberate act of provocation, raising serious concerns over national security.
In response, Poland implemented a no-fly zone along its eastern border with Belarus and Ukraine, while also restricting smaller civilian air traffic in the region to ensure safety.
Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski condemned the incursion, calling Russia’s claims of unintentional action “lies and denials.” He emphasized that such acts could not be tolerated and underscored the need for immediate international attention.
The United States expressed concern over the incident. Former US General Ben Hodges criticized the current air defense systems and called for enhanced ground-based capabilities to address such threats.
NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe, General Alexus Grynkewich, described the response as “decisive” but highlighted the need for further technical analysis to determine the full scope of the violations.
The incident has reportedly heightened anxiety in neighboring countries, including Lithuania, given the proximity to NATO borders.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the incursions and reiterated calls for a joint European air defense system.
He emphasized that improved air security coordination and additional support for Ukraine were necessary to deter further provocations.
The international community continues to closely monitor the situation, with discussions underway on strengthening air defense systems, coordinating intelligence sharing, and preparing potential responses to prevent escalation.
This drone incursion represents a serious escalation in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, with direct implications for NATO’s collective security and European defense strategies.
Poland’s move to involve the UN Security Council underscores the global dimension of the conflict, signaling that violations of NATO member airspace are not just regional incidents but international security concerns.
