Military launch follows recent Kashmir terror attack that reignited cross-border accusations and warnings of imminent conflict.

Pakistan test-fired a surface-to-surface ballistic missile on May 3, a high-stakes show of military strength as tensions with neighboring India surge following a deadly attack on tourists in Kashmir last month.
The Pakistani military announced the successful launch of the Abdali Weapon System, which has a range of 450 kilometers (280 miles). Officials said the exercise was aimed at testing the missile’s advanced navigation and maneuverability systems, and ensuring “operational readiness” of its forces.

The launch comes in the wake of an April 22 gun attack in the Indian-administered town of Pahalgam, which left several tourists dead. India has squarely blamed Pakistan-based militants for the massacre — a claim Islamabad has strongly denied.
While the missile was not aimed toward India — Pakistani test launches are typically directed into the Arabian Sea or the remote deserts of Balochistan — the timing and messaging add to an already volatile atmosphere.
President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif issued public congratulations to military personnel involved in the test, signaling high-level endorsement of the show of force.
India has also ramped up its own military posture. On April 27, the Indian Navy conducted successful anti-ship missile firings, emphasizing the “readiness of platforms, systems, and crew for long-range precision offensive strike.”

Just days earlier, Pakistan’s Information Minister Attaullah Tarar warned of “credible intelligence” suggesting India was preparing for an attack within days — a claim that has yet to be substantiated independently but adds fuel to a deeply entrenched rivalry.
The Kashmir region — a flashpoint for over seven decades — remains at the heart of the dispute. Both nations claim the territory in full but control it in parts. With nuclear-armed neighbors exchanging veiled threats and flexing military muscle, the latest developments underscore the fragile peace in South Asia.
