The younger brother of fugitive Nirav Modi was arrested on July 4 under a Red Corner Notice issued by India’s CBI and ED, and now faces charges of money laundering and criminal conspiracy in one of India's biggest banking scams.
Nehal Deepak Modi, younger brother of fugitive diamond trader Nirav Modi, was arrested in the United States on July 4 following joint extradition requests from India’s Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Enforcement Directorate (ED).
The arrest was made on the basis of a Red Corner Notice issued by Interpol, marking a significant step forward in India's pursuit of justice in the Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud.
Indian authorities accuse Nehal Modi of money laundering under the PMLA and criminal conspiracy under the IPC, linked to the ₹13,000 crore PNB scam.
He is alleged to have helped conceal and transfer illicit funds—using shell companies and overseas transactions—and assisted in destroying evidence, including moving gold and cash from Dubai after the scam surfaced.
The US Department of Justice confirmed the arrest, noting Nehal’s hearing is scheduled for July 17, when he may apply for bail—anticipated to be opposed by US prosecutors.
Nehal, a Belgian national fluent in English, Gujarati, and Hindi, had unsuccessfully challenged the Red Corner Notice before being detained.
His arrest aligns with India’s ongoing efforts to repatriate Nirav and other fugitives, including uncle Mehul Choksi, who remains at large in Antigua and Barbuda.
