Balendra Shah, Kathmandu’s independent mayor and former rapper, has gained significant support among Nepal’s youth following Gen Z-led protests and PM KP Sharma Oli’s resignation, emerging as a notable figure in the country’s evolving political landscape.

Balendra Shah, popularly known as Balen, has become a prominent figure in Nepalese politics, particularly among the nation’s youth, after massive Gen Z-led protests across the country led to the resignation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli.
Born on April 27, 1990, in Kathmandu, Shah is a structural engineer by training and gained recognition as a rapper before entering politics.

In 2022, he made history by defeating party-backed candidates to become the first independent Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City.
His tenure has focused on urban infrastructure improvements, promoting transparency, and tackling corruption within municipal governance.
Shah openly supported the recent Gen Z-led protests, calling them a genuine youth movement. He stated, “The rally is clearly a spontaneous movement of Gen Z, for whom even I may seem old.”
While he is above the age limit for protest participation, Shah expressed solidarity with the demonstrators and cautioned political leaders against exploiting the movement for their own agendas. He also urged restraint among protesters, emphasizing the protection of public and private property.

With the political vacuum created by Oli’s resignation, discussions have surfaced around potential candidates for the interim prime minister position, and Shah’s name has been mentioned due to his popularity among younger voters and his anti-establishment image.
Analysts view his rising profile as indicative of a shift toward younger leadership in Nepal’s political landscape.
Balendra Shah’s rise from rapper to Kathmandu’s mayor, and his growing popularity as a possible prime ministerial contender, reflects a shift in Nepal’s politics, where younger leaders and anti-establishment figures are gaining wider public support.
