Iran postpones state funeral for Supreme Leader Khamenei amid expected unprecedented turnout

Iran has postponed the state funeral for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, which had been planned for March 4 evening in Tehran, state media reported, citing concerns over accommodating an “unprecedented” number of mourners.

State television said the farewell ceremony for the “martyred Imam” will be held at a later unspecified date, with authorities emphasizing the need for adequate infrastructure and preparations to handle the expected turnout from across the country. No new date has yet been announced.

The postponement comes after a three-day public farewell ceremony was to begin late Wednesday at Tehran’s Imam Khomeini prayer hall, where citizens were expected to pay respects to the body of the late leader.

Senior Iranian officials had earlier said the ceremony would continue for three days, with plans to later announce funeral procession details.

Khamenei, 86, was confirmed killed in a joint US-Israeli military strike last weekend, a development that has triggered widespread tensions across the region and heightened security concerns. Iranian state media announced a 40-day official mourning period following his death, underscoring the significance of his decades-long leadership.

While authorities have not directly linked the postponement to the broader security situation, analysts say the escalating conflict and logistical strains could be complicating arrangements. The delay also reflects the challenge of managing huge crowds during a period of ongoing regional hostilities.

Khamenei’s funeral and the succession of Iran’s next supreme leader are widely seen as key developments in the current Middle East crisis, with implications for geopolitical dynamics and internal stability within the Islamic Republic.
