In Hague, EAM Jaishankar and Dutch Defense Minister Brekelmans underscore urgent need for deeper security cooperation as regional threats mount in Europe and Asia.

As geopolitical tremors ripple across Europe and Asia, India and the Netherlands are aligning more closely than ever before on matters of defense and security. In a high-level dialogue on May 19, Dutch Minister of Defense Ruben Brekelmans met with Indian External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar, marking a pivotal moment in the strategic partnership between the two nations.
"In these turbulent times, close cooperation with India is more important than ever," Brekelmans stated in a post on X, formerly Twitter. Calling it a “great honour” to host Jaishankar in The Hague, he emphasized their shared discussions on global security challenges and the pressing need to elevate the bilateral defense relationship.

Jaishankar echoed the sentiment, noting the convergence of perspectives on key regional threats. “Pleased to meet Defence Minister Ruben Brekelmans in The Hague on May 20. Exchanged views on our respective security perspectives and challenges. Also spoke about the benefits of forging a bilateral defense partnership,” he said in a statement.
The conversation comes at a critical juncture. With Europe grappling with the ongoing repercussions of the Russia-Ukraine war and Asia facing escalating tensions in the Indo-Pacific, India’s role as a democratic pillar of stability has become increasingly indispensable to Western allies.
Jaishankar’s visit to the Netherlands is part of a broader European tour that includes stops in Denmark and Germany from May 19 to 24. According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, the trip aims to deepen ties and discuss a full spectrum of bilateral, regional, and global issues.

His arrival in the Netherlands also included an engagement with the Indian diaspora. “Interacted with representatives of the Indian community this evening. Value the contribution of the community to building a stronger relationship between India and the Netherlands,” Jaishankar remarked.
The diplomatic outreach follows a wave of international solidarity with India in response to the recent terror attack in Pahalgam. The Netherlands, along with Germany and Denmark, were among the nations that swiftly condemned the act and reaffirmed their support for India’s fight against terrorism.
With evolving global security dynamics and democratic alliances under strain, the India-Netherlands engagement signals a purposeful step toward a more fortified and future-ready partnership.
