India has officially endorsed a BRICS statement expressing “grave concern” over recent military strikes on Iran, calling them a violation of international law and the UN Charter.
The statement, issued on June 25 by Brazil—holder of the rotating BRICS presidency—addresses strikes since June 13 and emphasizes the need for de-escalation and diplomacy.
Unlike an earlier SCO declaration that directly named Israel, the BRICS statement notably avoids mentioning Israel or the US. This neutral phrasing enabled India—unlike SCO—to sign the communique.
The joint declaration expresses deep concern over attacks on “peaceful nuclear installations,” refers to the escalation of regional security, and urges all parties to pursue dialogue and diplomacy. It also calls for civilian and humanitarian protections under international law and advocates for a nuclear- and WMD-free zone in the Middle East.
Previously, at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meeting on June 14, India had distanced itself from a statement that explicitly condemned Israel, citing a desire to preserve diplomatic balance .
Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian to express India’s concern following the US strikes. India's official response refrained from direct condemnation, instead stressing the need for immediate de-escalation through dialogue
