The Indian embassy in Phnom Penh has urged citizens to avoid non-essential travel to border areas as tensions escalate between Cambodian and Thai forces, issuing emergency helplines for assistance.
India has issued travel advisories for its nationals in Cambodia and Thailand as armed clashes between the two countries intensify along their shared border.
The Indian embassies in Phnom Penh and Bangkok warned citizens to avoid traveling to or near the border regions until further notice. Emergency helplines and email contacts have been shared for Indians needing assistance.
The military confrontation, which erupted on July 24, marks one of the most serious escalations in over a decade between Cambodia and Thailand.
The immediate trigger was a landmine explosion that injured Thai soldiers, followed by Cambodia’s reported deployment of BM‑21 rocket launchers near disputed temple areas. Thailand responded with airstrikes using F‑16 jets, and the fighting quickly spread.
At least 19 Thai civilians and one soldier were killed, while Cambodia reported eight civilian deaths and dozens injured. Tens of thousands have been displaced, with over 40,000 in Thailand and 20,000 in Cambodia seeking shelter away from the conflict zones. Civilian infrastructure including schools and hospitals has sustained damage on both sides.
The UN Security Council convened an emergency meeting to address the crisis. Cambodia has demanded a ceasefire and accused Thailand of triggering the violence, while Thailand insists on bilateral dialogue. ASEAN’s current chair, Malaysia, has offered to mediate.
The root of the conflict lies in long-standing disputes over temple sites such as Preah Vihear and Ta Muen Thom.
Despite past rulings by the International Court of Justice, tensions over these locations persist. The recent violence has led to mutual envoy expulsions and a spike in nationalist rhetoric in both countries.
Indian nationals have been asked to stay away from high-risk areas and follow official guidance. In Cambodia, the Indian Embassy can be reached at +855 92881676 or [email protected].
In Thailand, travelers are advised to avoid border provinces including Ubon Ratchathani, Surin, and Sisaket, and to monitor updates from the Tourism Authority of Thailand.
The situation remains volatile, and Indian citizens are advised to remain alert, avoid border travel, and stay connected with embassy channels.
