Biden, aged 82, has been diagnosed with aggressive hormone-sensitive prostate cancer, and his family is reviewing treatment options after urinary symptoms led to the discovery of a prostate nodule.
Former US President Joe Biden has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer, his office announced on May 18.
The diagnosis followed reports of urinary symptoms, leading to the discovery of a prostate nodule. The Biden family is currently exploring potential treatment plans with his medical team.
"While this represents a more aggressive form of the disease, the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive, which allows for effective management. The President and his family are reviewing treatment options with his physicians," the statement said.
Biden, 82, previously lost his son Beau Biden to cancer in 2015. According to the statement, his cancer has a "Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5)," indicating a highly abnormal and serious condition.
The Gleason score, which measures the aggressiveness of prostate cancer, ranges up to 10. A Grade Group 5 rating signifies the most severe form.
Prostate cancer remains the most common cancer among men in the United States.
The American Cancer Society notes that one in eight men is diagnosed with the disease in their lifetime.
While generally treatable in early stages, it is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths among men.
The announcement prompted reactions from across the political spectrum and beyond.
US President Donald Trump, Biden’s long-time political rival, said on Truth Social, "We extend our warmest and best wishes to Jill and the family, and we wish Joe a fast and successful recovery."
Vice President Kamala Harris also expressed her support on X (formerly Twitter), stating, "Joe is a fighter. I know he will face this challenge with the same strength, resilience, and optimism that have always defined his life and leadership. We are hopeful for a full and speedy recovery."
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted on X, “Deeply concerned to hear about @JoeBiden's health. Extend our best wishes to him for a quick and full recovery. Our thoughts are with Dr. Jill Biden and the family.”
Former US President Barack Obama wrote on X, "Michelle and I are thinking of the entire Biden family. Nobody has done more to find breakthrough treatments for cancer in all its forms than Joe, and I am certain he will fight this challenge with his trademark resolve and grace. We pray for a fast and full recovery."
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said, "I am very sorry to hear President Biden has prostate cancer. All the very best to Joe, his wife Jill, and their family, and wishing the president swift and successful treatment."
The announcement follows nearly a year after former President Biden withdrew from the 2024 US presidential race amid growing concerns over his health and advanced age.
At 82, Biden remains the oldest individual to have served as president in US history.
During his re-election campaign, Biden—then the Democratic nominee—faced intense scrutiny following a widely criticized performance in a televised debate against Republican contender and current President Donald Trump in June.
The Democratic Party later nominated Vice President Kamala Harris to lead the ticket in his place.
