Fatal shooting near Jewish Museum claims lives of two Israeli embassy staff in Washington DC

In a chilling incident that has rocked the diplomatic and Jewish communities, two staffers from the Israeli Embassy were shot and killed near the Capital Jewish Museum in downtown Washington, DC on May 21 evening. Authorities have confirmed that a suspect is in custody.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem revealed the victims were a man and a woman affiliated with the embassy. The fatal shooting occurred near 3rd and F Streets NW— just steps from the FBI’s Washington field office.

“This was a senseless act of violence,” Noem stated in a post on X. “Two Israeli Embassy staff were killed tonight near the Jewish Museum. We are working urgently to gather more information. Our prayers are with the families of the victims. We will bring this depraved perpetrator to justice.”

President Donald Trump condemned the attack in a post on Truth Social, attributing it to the rising tide of antisemitism.

“These horrible DC killings, based obviously on antisemitism, must end, NOW!” the President wrote. “Hatred and Radicalism have no place in the USA. Condolences to the families of the victims.”

Attorney General Pam Bondi confirmed she was at the scene, accompanied by former judge Jeanine Pirro, who now serves as the US. Attorney in Washington. Bondi called for unity and vigilance, writing: “Praying for the victims of this violence as we work to learn more.”

Israeli officials were quick to denounce the attack. Danny Danon, Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations, called the shooting a “depraved act of anti-Semitic terrorism.”

“We are confident that the US authorities will take strong action against those responsible for this criminal act,” Danon posted. “Israel will continue to act resolutely to protect its citizens and representatives everywhere in the world.”

The FBI’s Washington Field Office confirmed it is assisting the Metropolitan Police Department in the investigation. A spokesperson told The New York Times there is “no ongoing threat to public safety.”

As federal agents and local police piece together the motive behind the attack, the tragic deaths have reignited debate over the surge in antisemitic violence across the US and heightened concerns for the safety of foreign diplomats stationed in the capital.
