IndiaAI Mission, under the Ministry of Electronics and IT, has joined hands with OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, to introduce OpenAI Academy India, the company's first global educational initiative.
Announced on June 5, the program aims to democratize access to artificial intelligence education and tools across a wide spectrum of learners in the country.

Through this collaboration, OpenAI and IndiaAI have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to promote AI literacy and drive innovation.
The academy is designed to strengthen India’s growing digital infrastructure by equipping students, developers, educators, civil servants, nonprofit workers, and small business owners with vital AI competencies.
Courses will be delivered through a hybrid model, combining online and offline formats.
Initially available in English and Hindi, the curriculum will later expand to include more regional languages.
OpenAI’s educational content will be integrated into the IndiaAI Mission’s FutureSkills platform and shared with iGOT Karmayogi, a government training initiative.
“This partnership represents a significant stride towards making cutting-edge AI tools and knowledge accessible to all,” said Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.
“By opening doors to future-ready skills, we are enabling our startups, researchers, and developers to innovate faster and more effectively.”
In a bid to nurture grassroots innovation, OpenAI will provide up to $100,000 in API credits to 50 startups or fellows selected by the IndiaAI Mission.
The academy will also host hackathons across seven Indian states, involving about 25,000 students. Winners will gain the chance to attend OpenAI’s global Dev Day.
The Academy supports one of IndiaAI’s key goals: training one million teachers in using generative AI technologies within education.
To enhance this effort, OpenAI experts will conduct workshops and webinars in six major Indian cities, enriching both the learning experience and local engagement.
A dedicated Knowledge Hub will offer free access to video lessons, interactive exercises, practical modules, and peer-learning groups to encourage collaborative exploration of AI tools and concepts.
Jason Kwon, Chief Strategy Officer at OpenAI, lauded India’s rapid growth in the AI space, saying, “India is emerging as one of the most dynamic hubs for AI innovation. We are thrilled to collaborate with IndiaAI to empower individuals with the skills and confidence to harness AI meaningfully in their daily lives and careers.”
