India has emerged as the most targeted nation for mobile malware attacks, surpassing countries like the United States and Canada, according to the 2024 Mobile, IoT, and OT Threat Report by Zscaler ThreatLabz.

Analyzing over 20 billion mobile threat transactions between June 2023 and May 2024, the report reveals that India accounted for 28% of global mobile malware attacks—a significant leap from its previous rankings. In comparison, the United States registered 27.3% of attacks, while Canada stood at 15.9%.

This surge comes as India’s rapid digital transformation has created fertile ground for cybercriminals. A separate report highlights a 158% spike in financial losses through mobile-based scams in Delhi alone, with ₹452 crore stolen in just the first half of 2024. These statistics underscore the urgent need for Indian businesses and institutions to bolster their cybersecurity measures.

Phishing Scams Target Banking Users

The report also sheds light on an alarming increase in phishing scams targeting mobile users of India's leading private banks. Cybercriminals are deploying highly convincing fake banking websites to extract sensitive data, such as login credentials and financial information. These evolving tactics underscore the sophistication of modern cyberattacks and the growing vulnerabilities of digital ecosystems.

In the Asia-Pacific region, India accounted for 66.5% of mobile malware attacks, positioning it as a focal point of such threats. This dominance highlights the critical need for advanced security measures to protect digital and operational assets across industries.

Despite the surge in attacks, India has made notable progress in mitigating outbound threats. The country now ranks seventh in Asia-Pacific as a malware origin point, improving from fifth place last year. This improvement is attributed to enhanced cybersecurity practices and heightened awareness. However, challenges remain, particularly in addressing vulnerabilities in legacy systems and under-protected Internet of Things (IoT) environments.

Global Cyber Threat Trends

The Zscaler report also identified broader global trends, including a concerning rise in IoT-related malware. The report noted a 45% year-over-year increase in malware transactions involving IoT devices, driven by botnets—compromised device networks used for large-scale attacks. Additionally, over 200 malicious apps were identified on the Google Play Store, collectively downloaded more than 8 million times.

Experts are emphasizing the adoption of AI-powered cybersecurity solutions and Zero Trust frameworks to combat the escalating threats. They also call for stronger legislation and international collaboration to address the cross-border nature of many cyberattacks.

The findings highlight a pressing need for Indian organizations, and global entities alike, to enhance their cybersecurity frameworks. As digital adoption accelerates, so do the complexities of cyber threats, demanding a proactive and resilient defense strategy.
