Alexa+ replaces traditional voice commands with a generative AI “brain,” enabling more natural conversations and proactive task execution—now rolling out to Prime users and Echo smart displays.
Amazon’s voice assistant, Alexa, has undergone a substantial upgrade with its new generative AI–powered version, Alexa+, a revamped assistant now being rolled out more broadly after months of early-access testing.
Prime members in the US can access Alexa+ at no additional cost, while non-Prime users may have to pay a monthly subscription.
Alexa+ introduces more conversational and context-aware capabilities. Unlike its predecessors, which relied on scripted responses, Alexa+ is designed to sustain fluid dialogues, anticipating user needs, managing complex tasks, and even acting autonomously—such as coordinating routine arrangements or completing purchases without repeated prompts.
Leveraging large language models (LLMs) from Amazon and third-party providers like Anthropic, Alexa+ employs an "experts" architecture to interface with services ranging from Uber Eats to Ticketmaster, smart home devices, and even Ring cameras or music platforms like Spotify.
The user experience has also evolved visually. Amazon has introduced customizable widgets and “Alexicons”—animated icons representing Alexa's presence—on smart-display devices to make interactions feel more dynamic.
Despite the promise, Alexa+ is not a flawless performer yet. Amazon acknowledges ongoing challenges including occasional inaccuracies and missing features, such as delivering bedtime stories or ordering meals.
Reports estimate multi-step task accuracy currently ranges between 30% to 60%, with goals to improve toward 90% in the future.
From a broader lens, the upgrade signifies Amazon’s push to make Alexa a more proactive, intelligent assistant—shifting from voice command interface to a digital AI concierge. This move positions Alexa to better compete with other AI assistants like Google Gemini and ChatGPT on smart home platforms.
