Centre Releases Rs 6,406 Crore to States, UTs Under National Ayush Mission

The Centre has released Rs 6,406.99 crore through the National Ayush Mission (NAM) to States and Union Territories between financial years 2014–15 and 2025–26 to expand and integrate Ayush healthcare into conventional medical systems, an official factsheet said on Tuesday. The funding, with further support from the National Health Mission (NHM), has financed modernisation of local Ayush clinics, co‑location of services in public health facilities and the establishment of new traditional medical colleges.

Nearly 12,260 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs (Ayush AAMs) were functional as on September 19, 2026, against a NAM target of 12,500, and that NHM now offers Ayush services alongside standard care in 13,249 public health facilities. The government funds salaries for 25,322 Ayush doctors and 5,666 Ayush paramedics working across various states and union territories, the statement said. As many as 17 Ayush colleges have been approved for establishment across the country under the NAM, out of which 12 impart Ayurvedic education.

As on March 13, 2026, India has 593 Ayurveda colleges, 45,245 undergraduate seats, and 5,673 post-graduate seats, the statement said, adding that Ayurveda educational institutions–both public and private–are growing in number The All-India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA) signed a Common Empanelment Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the General Insurance Council (GIC) in February 2026 to empanel former with all 32 general insurance companies in India, marking the first time an Ayush institution entered into a universal empanelment agreement for cashless treatment.

The AIIA also launched a dedicated Ayush Health Insurance Helpline to assist beneficiaries with their insurance-related queries and improve awareness about Ayush insurance coverage. The AYURGYAN scheme run by the Ministry of Ayush, provides financial backing for R&D initiatives. Out of a total research funding pool of Rs 17.79 crore across 34 projects, Ayurveda accounts for half of the portfolio, receiving Rs. 9.38 crore for 17 dedicated projects.
