Twin approvals mark a significant upgrade in India’s precision-strike capabilities and reinforce the strategic depth of the US-India defense partnership.

In a major step toward strengthening India’s frontline combat readiness, the United States has approved two key military sales worth a combined $93 million, clearing the transfer of Javelin anti-tank missile systems and Excalibur precision artillery shells.
The notifications, issued by the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) on November 19, confirm State Department approval for both packages — a move that underscores Washington’s continued support for India’s defence modernisation and regional deterrence efforts.

According to the DSCA, the first tranche — valued at $45.7 million — covers the Javelin Missile System. India’s request includes 100 FGM-148 Javelin rounds, a fly-to-buy missile, 25 command launch units, missile simulators, spares, and full lifecycle support.
The agency said the system will significantly bolster India’s ability to counter “current and future threats” and enhance deterrence in a sensitive regional security environment.

A second notification outlined the approval of Excalibur artillery projectiles worth $47.1 million. The package includes 216 M982A1 precision-guided tactical rounds, ancillary equipment, fire-control support, and US technical assistance.
According to the DSCA, the Excalibur system will provide Indian brigades with dramatic improvements in first-strike accuracy, without altering the region’s military balance.
Both approvals have now been formally notified to the US Congress. The agency noted that the transfers will deepen the strategic partnership between Washington and New Delhi, aligning military cooperation with broader Indo-Pacific security priorities.
