With Roger Binny stepping down, consensus is reportedly forming around a record-setting ex-player to lead Indian cricket’s top governing body.
A legendary Indian cricketer, celebrated for breaking multiple records, is reportedly being considered for the position of BCCI president, according to a media report.
Informal discussions have already taken place with the cricketer during the Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy in England, indicating serious consideration for the role, a Dainik Jagran report has stated. However, it remains unclear whether the cricketer has given any indication, affirmative or otherwise regarding acceptance of the position.
The potential appointment aligns with a trend of former cricketers assuming leadership roles within the Board. Sourav Ganguly became BCCI president in 2019, followed by 1983 World Cup winner Roger Binny, who took over the presidency thereafter. Binny recently stepped down after reaching the 70-year age limit imposed by BCCI rules.
Following Binny's exit, vice-president Rajeev Shukla is serving as the acting president. Official elections for key BCCI positions, including president, secretary, vice-president, joint secretary, treasurer, and IPL chairman are scheduled to be held during the BCCI Annual General Meeting (AGM) in the last week of September.
According to the report, the cricketer in question has not yet made a decision on whether to put his name forward, and the likely transition is expected to happen by consensus without a contested election.
Additionally, it anticipates that Devajit Saikia will retain the position of joint secretary; Prabhtej Bhatia and Rohan Gauns Desai are expected to continue as treasurer and joint secretary, respectively.
For the IPL chairman post, names being discussed include former Mumbai Cricket Association secretary Sanjay Naik and current BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla.
