Jharkhand Student Protest: Opposition Parties Condemn Ranchi Police Action Against Students

Opposition parties have joined the Congress in condemning the police action against student protesters in Ranchi, following a march toward the Jharkhand Assembly over alleged exam irregularities and demands raised by students.

The Jharkhand student protest on Monday saw police use water cannons, tear gas and lathi charges after protesters marched toward the state Assembly. The police action against the Jharkhand student protesters has since triggered a political confrontation, with opposition leaders demanding restraint and dialogue with the students.

The latest Ranchi student protest has also drawn reactions from AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal, CPI general secretary D. Raja, Congress leader P. Chidambaram and Samajwadi Party MP Awadhesh Prasad, while Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren accused the BJP of attempting to turn the students' movement into a political platform.

“I support the demands of the protesting students in Jharkhand and appeal to the govt to resolve their issues immediately. Violence against students is simply unacceptable,” AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal posted on X (formerly Twitter).

The reaction came amid growing criticism of the Jharkhand police action against student protesters, with political parties demanding that the government address the students' grievances surrounding the examination process.

D. Raja condemns Ranchi police action

CPI general secretary D. Raja said students who had gathered to seek justice and accountability should not be treated primarily as a law-and-order problem.

“The use of water cannons, tear gas and lathi charge against protesting students is unacceptable and only deepens their sense of grievance. The Jharkhand government must immediately stop the use of force and create conditions for meaningful engagement with the protesting students.

“Their representatives should be invited for dialogue, their grievances heard patiently, and concrete steps taken to address their legitimate demands. In a democracy, disagreement cannot be answered with barricades and police action. Engagement and dialogue, not violence, must be the government’s response to students demanding justice,” Raja said in a statement.

The CPI leader's comments have added to the growing opposition reaction to the Jharkhand student protest, particularly over the use of tear gas, water cannons and lathi charges during the Ranchi demonstration.

AISA alleges BJP-linked elements tried to discredit student movement

The Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation, which supports the JMM-led government in Jharkhand, also condemned the violence reported during the Ranchi student protest.

On Tuesday, the party's student wing, All India Students' Association (AISA), shared videos that it said showed troublemakers engaging in violence. AISA also alleged that some youths had been brought from West Bengal in trucks for the protest despite allegedly having no connection with the Jharkhand students' movement.

“Anti-social elements brought by BJP were caught on camera trying to criminalise the J’khand students’ movement. AISA stands for peaceful democratic protest & rejects all violence. J’khand govt can’t use these anti-social elements to brand the whole movement as violent,” AISA wrote on X.

The allegations have intensified the political dispute over the Jharkhand student protest, with rival political parties making competing claims about who was responsible for the violence during the demonstration.

The allegations regarding the involvement of BJP-linked groups and people allegedly brought from outside Jharkhand have not been independently established and remain claims made by AISA.

Congress attacks police action against Jharkhand students

The Congress, which is part of the ruling alliance in Jharkhand, had also strongly criticized the police action against student protesters in Ranchi on Monday night.

Congress leader and former Union home minister P. Chidambaram compared the Jharkhand student protesters with those who participated in the Jantar Mantar protest in Delhi.

“Jharkhand student protesters are no different from the Jantar Mantar protesters... I saw visuals of Jharkhand students withdrawing from the protest site and on whom the police used tear gas and lathis; shame on the police and their political masters.”

The Congress has continued to criticize the police response even as it remains part of the ruling alliance headed by Hemant Soren.

On Tuesday, Congress spokesperson Ragini Nayak shared videos that she said showed men at a BJP gathering in Ranchi throwing stones.

“The stone-pelters in Ranchi who are ‘anti-national’ — ’anti-social elements’ are none other than the BJP’s goons! Perhaps it was for these very ones that Mohan Bhagwat ji was appealing not to call them ‘Anti National’! Shame on them!!!” she posted on X.

The competing allegations have made the Ranchi student protest and police action a larger political issue, with the BJP and ruling alliance trading accusations over the events surrounding the march.

Hemant Soren says BJP is politicizing student movement

Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren also addressed the student protest in Jharkhand during his speech in the state Assembly on Tuesday.

Soren accused the BJP of attempting to use the youth movement as a political platform. He also said the state government had agreed to demands raised by the aspirants, including the cancellation of certain examinations.

His speech was disrupted by sloganeering from BJP legislators.

“The parasitic BJP tried yesterday too to turn the youth’s movement into its political platform. The students’ issue... will be with the students, and my young comrades of Jharkhand will get justice,” he later posted on X.

Soren's comments came amid a growing political debate over the Jharkhand exam protest, with the state government maintaining that it has agreed to some of the demands raised by the students.

Opposition questions government response to student protest

Samajwadi Party MP Awadhesh Prasad also criticized the government over the Ranchi police action against student protesters.

“The government is moving on the path of dictatorship. This stubborn attitude of the government has no place in democracy,” Prasad told IANS.

The Jharkhand student protest over alleged exam irregularities has now become a major political issue, with opposition parties questioning the use of force against students and demanding dialogue, while the Jharkhand government says it is addressing the concerns raised by the aspirants.

The controversy has also brought renewed attention to the wider issue of student protests over examination irregularities in India, as political parties continue to debate how governments and law enforcement agencies should respond when students take to the streets demanding accountability.

For now, the central dispute remains over the events in Ranchi: whether the police action against Jharkhand student protesters was justified, who was responsible for the violence reported during the demonstration, and whether the students' demands over examinations will be addressed through dialogue rather than further confrontation.
