A political and academic controversy has intensified in West Bengal after Narendra Modi described Jadavpur University as a centre of “anarchy,” prompting a sharp response from the university’s teachers and political leaders.
Speaking at an election rally, Modi alleged that the campus had become a hub of “anti-national slogans” and disorder, questioning the state government’s handling of one of Bengal’s premier institutions.

The remarks drew strong criticism from academics associated with the university. Teachers said the comments undermined the institution’s academic standing and misrepresented student activity, asserting that dissent and debate are integral to a university environment.
The Jadavpur University Teachers' Association defended the institution’s legacy, pointing to its consistent academic performance and contributions to research and public discourse. Faculty members rejected the characterisation of the campus as disorderly, calling it an attempt to politicise higher education.
The row quickly took a political turn, with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee backing the university and accusing the Prime Minister of undermining a respected public institution. She argued that student protests reflect democratic engagement rather than anarchy.
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, however, countered Banerjee, alleging that the state government had allowed institutions to decline due to neglect and political interference. He cited concerns flagged in reports about administrative lapses and governance issues at the university.
