Assam Congress President Seeks ₹10 Crore in Damages Over Alleged Defamatory Comments by Chief Minister
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma
Bhupen Borah, the president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, has lodged a ₹10 crore defamation suit against the state's Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma. The legal action stems from accusations that Sarma made disparaging remarks that purportedly tarnished Borah's public image during the recent election campaign.
The legal complaint, filed this past Thursday, specifically targets comments made by Sarma suggesting that Borah would defect to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) by 2025. Borah has publicly refuted these claims and expressed his resolve to seek justice through the courts, criticizing what he perceives as Sarma's strategy of distraction via baseless claims.
Previously, Sarma had insinuated that the Assam Congress was under his sway and predicted a shift in allegiance among most of its leaders towards development-centric politics. He went as far as to assert that Borah himself would be among those joining the BJP in the following year.
Borah has firmly contested Sarma's claims about his potential party switch, maintaining his commitment to the Congress and denouncing the Chief Minister's statements as unfounded. The legal battle marks a new chapter in the political discourse between the two prominent figures in Assam's political landscape.
