AIADMK-BJP reunite ahead of 2026 TN assembly polls

Stressing that the BJP would not interfere in AIADMK’s internal affairs, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said the two parties will fight the polls next year under the leadership of party heavyweight and former chief minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami.

AIADMK and the BJP

In a politically charged move that could reshape Tamil Nadu’s electoral landscape, the AIADMK and the BJP have officially rekindled their alliance for the 2026 state assembly elections.

The announcement came on April 11 from Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who confirmed that the two parties will fight the upcoming polls under the leadership of AIADMK heavyweight and former Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS).

Speaking at a packed joint press conference in Chennai, flanked by EPS and outgoing Tamil Nadu BJP chief K. Annamalai, Shah said, “We will develop a common minimum program if necessary,” indicating a strategic and coordinated campaign plan.

This isn’t the first time the two parties have joined forces. Shah revisited the 1998 Lok Sabha elections as a benchmark, when the AIADMK-BJP alliance — then led by the late J Jayalalithaa — swept the state, bagging 30 out of 39 seats.

He expressed confidence that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) would “comfortably win” in Tamil Nadu once again.

In a gesture aimed at diffusing potential concerns over the coalition’s dynamics, Shah stressed that the BJP would not interfere in AIADMK’s internal affairs. Responding to queries on the alliance’s specifics, he quipped, “Let us also do some work. You don't worry about everything. Leave some worries for us to handle too.”

The timing of the announcement coincided with another significant shift: the replacement of K. Annamalai as Tamil Nadu BJP chief by Nainar Nagenthiran. Shah, while expressing gratitude for Annamalai’s “unprecedented contributions,” clarified that the leadership change was unrelated to the alliance decision, which had already been finalized.

The BJP plans to tap into Annamalai’s organizational capabilities at the national level, signaling his continued importance in the party’s broader strategy, Shah added.

After Jayalalithaa’s death in 2016, the AIADMK’s electoral performance has seen diminishing returns. In the 2021 assembly elections, despite the alliance, the BJP secured only four seats, and the AIADMK struggled to hold ground.

The partnership eventually fractured in 2023, but today’s reunion signals a renewed push to consolidate anti-DMK votes and reposition the AIADMK-BJP combine as a formidable force.

With polls less than a year away, the revived alliance now gears up for a high-stakes battle that could redefine the political equation in Tamil Nadu.
