Dr. Rajesh K. Pillania, Professor at MDI Gurgaon, highlights the importance of skipping the morning news to save time and boost focus. He suggests prioritizing health, relationships, and productivity by starting the day positively with intentional actions and meaningful connections instead of getting caught up in negative headlines and distractions.
One crucial aspect of modern life is reading newspapers in the morning, physically or virtually. For many of us, mornings look incomplete without reading the news! This might not be a great idea, and here are some reasons why.
First, starting a day with negative news is not a great idea. Human beings are more scared of losing what we have, and that fear is an emotion many industries use to sell things to us, including the media. Newspapers are dominated by negative news, many of which have no direct or immediate impact on one’s life.
Second, we have limited resources in terms of time, energy, and attention. Mornings are busy, and time, energy and attention are critical resources; reading newspapers is not the best use of these.

Third, each day is essential, and focus is what really matters. We need to own and control our attention in the morning to set the agenda and not be influenced by the news.
Fourth, we need to focus on actionable information, i.e., something we can use to take action. For example, the weather report is actionable information, as we can dress and prepare for a rain forecast. However, newspapers are full of information that we have little control over or influence and use in our daily lives.
Fifth, many of us do not know much or care to know about ourselves, our families, our friends, and our communities. First, we need to set our own homes in order before we can focus on what is happening on Mars!
There are many more reasons why reading newspapers in the mornings is not a great idea! The author knows there are some shortcomings to not reading newspapers. Still, in the current context where stress, loneliness and unhappiness have become a big challenge, the negatives of reading newspapers in the morning far outweigh the positives.
The focus should be on using morning time more productively and positively for what really matters, i.e., good health, good relationships, and good work, including giving back!
