Dr. Rajesh K. Pillania, Professor at MDI Gurgaon, highlights the alarming overuse of mobile phones, especially among youngsters. He emphasizes their negative impact on well-being, relationships, learning, and society. Constant comparisons and distractions cause anxiety and loneliness. While mobiles have benefits, limiting their use is crucial to reclaim real-life interactions and overall happiness.

Today, the use of mobile phones has reached an alarming degree, causing a lot of damage to life, particularly youngsters! Various research studies, including the annual World Happiness Reports, show that mobile phone addiction leads to loneliness and a reduction in well-being. The constant comparison of mobile phones and social media is creating a lot of anxiety and stress. Also, continuous distraction through mobile phones and lack of focus massively impact the quality of learning, education, work, relationships, life, society, countries, and the world.
While visiting various remote areas in the country, the author was repeatedly told that mobile is the source of unhappiness! Earlier, there were fewer comparisons and more daily physical-social interactions. Now, a lot of information is available on mobile and social media, and youngsters are comparing themselves with others. They spend much time on mobile phones and social media at the cost of physical interactions, relationships and sports.

The author invites you to do an interesting social experiment: Observe people around you for 10 minutes. See how often they have been using mobile phones and for how long. Run this experiment in different settings with different people. Do it for a week, and you will realise the extent to which mobile phones have overtaken our daily lives! Why one needs to be available to everyone all the time? Why is so much social media consumption needed? It might be an exaggeration, but it looks like our lives have been taken over by mobile phones! To get our lives back, maybe we should stop using mobile phones to realise that there is a life beyond mobile phones. That there is value in the physical world and physical interactions. That spending time together with family and friends without being on mobile phones is essential.

Yes, there are positives and benefits to using mobile phones, but the negative impacts are becoming very significant, so maybe it's not a great idea to use them, at least not in the way they are being used now. A limited use of mobile phones is still a good idea and can help people live better lives. Having a mobile phone is no longer a style statement; not having one is a style statement.
