Israel: The protected child of US

The United States has long been a staunch ally of Israel in the tumultuous landscape of the Israel-Palestine conflict and has offered its unwavering support to the nation undermining broader human rights concerns of Palestinians.

The enduring alliance between the two nations is deeply rooted in strategic, political, and historical ties which has widely shaped US foreign policy in the Middle East and has perpetuated violence in Palestine.

The US has always stood firmly behind Israel, providing significant political, economic, and military support. This support has been quite evident in the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict where Benjamin Netanyahu-led government has ambushed Gaza left, right, and center but President Joe Biden has consistently backed Israel's right to defend itself despite the mounting concerns over increasing civilian deaths and humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

The Biden government on occasions, has taken moderate stance and advised Israel to exercise restraint and take a cautious approach during the conflict with Hamas in Gaza. Even in Iran’s retaliatory attack on Israel on Saturday, after it suspected the latter for the April 1 attack on its consulate in Syria, President Biden urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to carefully consider and strategize this offensive, and emphasized the need for thoughtful action in the aftermath of the attack.

Although it supported Israel’s “right to defend”, it made it clear that it would not participate in any Israeli retaliatory strikes on Iran and encouraged de-escalation and caution in the conflict.

But there has been little to no evidence that Israeli government has heeded to the advice. The role of US in the Israel-Palestine conflict has often been a subject of debate with some arguing that the support of US has been a hurdle in bringing lasting peace in the region.

Critics point at the US use of its veto power in the United Nations to block resolutions that might expose Israel's actions or bring justice to the Palestinians

Despite international calls for a more balanced and rights-based approach to the Israel-Palestine conflict, the US has remained steadfast in its support for Israel.

As the US continues to support Israel, there is a pressing need for a more principled and ethical approach that upholds the rights and dignity of all individuals involved.

A re-evaluation of US policy towards the conflict is essential, one that prioritizes human rights, justice, and equality for both Israelis and Palestinians.
