The family of Haryana cadre IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, who allegedly died by suicide on October 7, has given consent for his post-mortem examination, which is scheduled to be conducted on October 15 at PGIMER, Chandigarh.
Chandigarh Police confirmed the development, stating the procedure will be carried out by a board of doctors under the supervision of a magistrate, with the entire process being videographed to ensure transparency.

Kumar was found dead with a gunshot wound at his residence in Sector 11. Following multiple requests from the inspector general of police (IGP) and senior superintendent of police (SSP) for an early autopsy, the police had approached the Chandigarh District Court to direct the family to identify the body for post-mortem proceedings.
On October 14, the Court of Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMIC) Raminder Kaur issued a notice to Kumar’s wife, Amneet Puran Kumar, an IAS officer of the 2001 Haryana cadre, directing her to file a reply on October 15.
In a statement, Amneet said she had consented to the post-mortem in view of assurances from the UT Police for a “fair, transparent, and impartial investigation” and the Haryana Government’s commitment to take action against any erring officials.
“Considering the evidentiary importance of a timely post-mortem and in the larger interest of justice, I have agreed for the same to be carried out as per prescribed procedure, by the constituted Board of Doctors, with the presence of a ballistic expert, under the supervision of a Magistrate, and with videography of the entire process to ensure complete transparency,” she said.
Amneet emphasized her “full faith in the Judiciary and the Police authorities” and expressed hope that the investigation would be conducted professionally, impartially, and in a time-bound manner. She added that she would continue full cooperation with the investigating team but would not issue further public statements, requesting the media to respect the matter’s sensitivity.
Chandigarh Police have also sought a court direction for the production of Kumar’s laptop and issued notices to the Haryana Government for certain documents, citing the need to preserve crucial forensic evidence for the ongoing investigation.
