President Droupadi Murmu has appointed six new governors for states including Assam, and Manipur, and reshuffled three others, according to a communique issued by the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
“These appointments will take effect from the dates they will assume charge of their respective offices, said the statement released on July 27.
Lakshman Prasad Acharya has been appointed as the governor of Assam, with Manipur in additional charge. He replaced Anusuiya Uikye, serving as Manipur governor since February last year.
"Lakshman Prasad Acharya, Governor of Sikkim, appointed as Governor of Assam and has also been given additional charge of the Governor of Manipur," the statement noted.
Gulab Chand Kataria has replaced Banwarilal Purohit as the governor of Punjab under major gubernatorial appointments, it said.
This development comes after President Droupadi Murmu accepted the resignation of Punjab governor and Chandigarh administrator Banwarilal Purohit as the governor of Punjab and the administrator of Chandigarh.
Veteran BJP leader Om Prakash Mathur will be the new governor of Sikkim, the communique said.
The directive further noted the appointment of Jharkhand Governor C P Radhakrishnan as the new governor of Maharashtra. He replaced incumbent Ramesh Bais. C P Radhakrishnan has also been in charge of Telangana.
Former Union Labor and Employment Minister Santosh Kumar Gangwar is appointed as the new Jharkhand governor in place of Radhakrishnan.
Jishnu Dev Varma has been appointed as the new governor of Telangana, who is a former Deputy Chief Minister of Tripura.
Former IAS officer K Kailashnathan has been appointed as the new Lt Governor of Puducherry. He is considered one of the trusted aides of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Kailashnathan served as chief principal secretary to Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and stepped down on June 30 after holding the post for more than a decade.
Kalraj Mishra has been replaced by senior BJP leader from Maharashtra Haribhau Kisanrao as the newgovernor of Rajasthan.
Former Lok Sabha member from Assam Ramen Deka has been appointed as the Governor of Chhattisgarh, and C H Vijayashankar, the former Lok Sabha member from Mysore in Karnataka, will be Meghalaya governor, the Rashtrapati Bhavan communique said.
