PM Modi announces Mission ‘Sudarshan Chakra’, an indigenous multi-layered air-defense shield

India has announced Mission ‘Sudarshan Chakra’, a nationwide air-defense initiative unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his Independence Day speech from the Red Fort on Aug 15.

Modi emphasized that the system would “not only defend but also punish the enemy,” drawing inspiration from the mythological Sudarshan Chakra.

Sudarshan Chakra is said to be a multi-layered shield that will bring together surveillance/early-warning sensors, command-and-control, and interceptor systems to detect and destroy incoming aerial threats (missiles, aircraft, drones).

The initiative will be developed as a multi-layered air defense network, designed to counter missiles, drones, rockets, and other airborne weapons. It will integrate long-range radars, satellites, aircraft, UAV surveillance, and long-range interceptor missiles to provide a nationwide protective shield.

The S-400 air defense system, which India has already inducted, is expected to play a role within this larger framework. According to official statements, the shield will not only detect and intercept incoming threats but also strengthen India’s retaliatory capabilities.

The mission is aimed at creating a reliable indigenous defense mechanism that reduces dependence on external systems.Reports also note an offensive/counter-strike dimension integrated into the overall posture.

The system is being positioned as India’s answer to Israel’s Iron Dome and America’s proposed Golden Dome, designed to intercept and neutralize missile and aerial attacks.

The mission will leverage and integrate ongoing indigenous efforts, frequently mentioning India’s Integrated Air Command and Control System (IACCS) and programs such as Akash/Akash Prime, Project Kusha (long-range SAM), and existing deployments like S-400 to create a cohesive, layered network.

The announcement comes in the wake of intensifying security dynamics, particularly after Operation Sindoor, a military confrontation involving aerial threats.
