On the 75th anniversary of its adoption, President Murmu underscores the Constitution’s role in fostering social justice, inclusive growth, and India’s evolving global identity.
The Indian Constitution is a dynamic and forward-looking document that has enabled the nation to achieve significant milestones in social justice and inclusive development, President Droupadi Murmu said on Nov 26.
Speaking at an event inaugurating year-long celebrations for the 75th anniversary of the Constitution's adoption, President Murmu acknowledged the pivotal role played by the 15 women members of the Constituent Assembly in shaping the historic document.
"Our Constitution is a living and progressive document," she stated. "Our farsighted Constitution makers designed it to incorporate new ideas in response to changing times.
Through this framework, we have accomplished many ambitious goals related to social justice and inclusive development. With a new approach, we are earning for India a new identity in the comity of nations."
The President also highlighted the visionary directive of the Constitution makers for India to play a significant role in promoting global peace and security.
"Seventy-five years ago, in this very Central Hall of the Samvidhan Sadan, the Constituent Assembly completed the monumental task of drafting the Constitution for a newly independent nation," she noted.
Murmu reflected on the nearly three years of deliberation by some of India’s finest minds that resulted in the Constitution. She added that the document is, in essence, a culmination of the country’s prolonged struggle for independence.
"The ideals of our unparalleled national movement are enshrined in the Constitution, especially in the Preamble, which outlines justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity. These ideals have defined India for centuries and continue to inspire our collective journey forward," she emphasized.
The President also highlighted the interdependence of these principles, stating, "The ideals presented in the Preamble complement each other, creating an environment where every citizen can thrive, contribute to society, and support one another."
President Murmu praised the active roles played by the executive, legislature, judiciary, and citizens in upholding constitutional ideals.
She emphasized that Parliament has passed several legislations over the years to reflect the aspirations of the people, particularly those aimed at uplifting marginalized communities.
"In recent years, the government has implemented numerous measures to enhance the development of all sections of society, especially the weaker sections. These decisions have improved lives and opened new opportunities for growth," she observed.
She also lauded the passage of the women’s reservation law, describing it as the start of a transformative era for women’s empowerment in India’s democracy.
To mark the occasion, President Murmu released Maithili and Sanskrit translations of the Constitution, further showcasing its inclusivity and cultural depth.
