Sharma’s May 16 death in Bhopal sparked outrage over allegations of dowry harassment and mental torture.

The Madhya Pradesh government has recommended a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the death of Noida resident Twisha Sharma, accepting her family’s repeated demand for an independent investigation by the central agency.
Sharma, 31, was found hanging from an exercise rod on the terrace of her matrimonial home in Bhopal on May 16, triggering a major controversy amid allegations of dowry harassment and sustained mental torture.

According to an official notification issued by the state Home Department, the government has granted formal consent to transfer the investigation to the CBI.
“Exercising powers under Section 6 of the Delhi Special Police Establishment Act, 1946, the Madhya Pradesh government, in the name of the Governor, has authorized the extension of the CBI’s jurisdiction across the state for investigation of this specific case,” the order said.
The notification added that the agency’s mandate would include investigation into the primary offence, any alleged abetment, and related criminal conspiracy.
Signed by Home Department Secretary Krishnaveni Deshavatu, the order has been sent to key central and state authorities to ensure an immediate transfer of the case.
Copies have been forwarded to the Joint Secretary in the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), the Union Home Secretary, the CBI Director in New Delhi, the Madhya Pradesh Director General of Police, the Bhopal District Magistrate, the Bhopal Police Commissioner, and regional CBI officials in Bhopal.
The development comes days after Bhopal Police Commissioner Harinarayanchari Mishra confirmed that Sharma died by suicide. Referring to the post-mortem report, he said the cause of death was hanging, while stressing that investigators would examine the circumstances that allegedly pushed her to take the extreme step.
Following her death, Sharma’s family accused her in-laws of prolonged mental harassment linked to dowry demands.
Her brother, Harshit Sharma, said Twisha had been under severe emotional distress and had expressed helplessness to her family. He claimed she wanted to leave her matrimonial home and return to Noida.
Twisha had married Samarth Singh, son of retired sessions judge Giribala Singh, in December 2025 after the two met through a dating application in 2024. Samarth Singh has remained absconding for eight days since her death.
The case drew further attention after Twisha’s father, Navnidhi Sharma, alleged that the accused family was attempting to use its legal influence to secure relief from the courts. He was quoted as saying by ANI that the family would move the High Court seeking cancellation of Giribala Singh’s anticipatory bail.
