India intensifies engagement with global partners, says Jaishankar, citing recent trade deals

India is engaging global partners more intensively from a position of strength, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Feb 17, pointing to several recently concluded trade agreements that underscore its increasing economic diplomacy and international cooperation.

Jaishankar spoke at the Global Economic Cooperation Conference in Mumbai, emphasizing that the international trade landscape is undergoing significant change.

Addressing the summit, Jaishankar said that recent pacts demonstrate India’s strategic role in global trade and its readiness to deepen partnerships.

He described the world’s current phase as volatile and uncertain, with old frameworks of economic order shifting and new models of cooperation emerging. “From a position of strength, India is engaging international partners more intensively,” he said, stressing that the country’s reform agenda will continue to advance.

The minister highlighted recent trade agreements as concrete examples of India’s enhanced global engagement. Following a phone call between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Donald Trump, the United States agreed to reduce tariffs on Indian goods to 18 percent from 50%, a move expected to significantly benefit Indian exporters.

He also noted that negotiations with the European Union on a proposed free trade agreement (FTA) have concluded, setting the stage for stronger two-way commerce and closer economic ties with the bloc. Officials have said the India–EU FTA could reshape trade flows between the two major economies.

Jaishankar framed India’s approach as part of a broader strategy to de-risk and diversify international partnerships in an era of global uncertainty.

He said production networks, financial systems and export controls are increasingly becoming tools of competition, and that India’s strengthened global engagement reflects its growing economic capabilities. The minister called for building trusted partnerships that complement India’s self-reliance while contributing to global stability.

Speaking at the same forum, officials noted that the global economic situation is entering what Jaishankar described as a “long twilight zone,” with old and emerging orders coexisting for the foreseeable future. In that context, expanding trade cooperation and comprehensive agreements are seen as essential for securing economic security and mutual growth.

His remarks come as India pursues a series of trade negotiations and partnerships with major markets, including the United States and the European Union, while continuing to strengthen ties with other global and regional partners.
